Huntington’s and Putnam County’s Farmers’ Markets May 5 2012
May 5, 2012
I think demand for fresh local produce is rising; I know ours is and it seems that many local people are wanting more. We stopped by the Central City Market just in case anything was going on and the “Opening Soon” on the website was not up to date. Alas, it was accurate.
We then drove up to the Putnam County market in Hurricane and despite the rain, it was pretty busy. I spoke to a couple of the producers there and they said the increase of use of low and high tunnels have made it easy to start their market earlier in the season. They offered a variety of salad greens, herbs, shitake mushrooms, tomato plants, flowering hanging baskets, eggs, poultry, beef, pork, honey, and much much more.

Slightly smaller than our green market here in Dubrovnik, bet it will be much larger by June. Best place to buy fresh produce.
Oh sure. As the gardens grow there will be more providers. Right now most produce is salad greens that can grow in early spring or high or low tunnel crops that grew through the winter.
Very pretty, though. Thanks for sharing!
It was a rainy miserable day in the morning yesterday but the report on Facebook at the end of the day was that it was a great market. People in the area are very ready for local produce!
