Winery for Sale
Paul and Anna-Neale Taylor, after over 30 years teaching, opened the Roane Vineyards on Reedyville Road about 7 northwest of Spencer. A small producer, Roane Vineyards has earned top awards in numerous competitions.
Once a teacher, Paul remains a student. He and only one other West Virginia vintner will be going to the Southeastern United Grape & Wine Symposium in North Carolina in April.
He has 240 gallons of Chambourcin ready to bottle later this week. We tasted it and it was smooth and my husband feels it will be a good purchase. The three whites we tasted, the Traminette, Nobel Ridge and Blue Goose were all very drinkable off-dry (range in sweetness) and we purchased several bottles.
Paul says there are issues with marketing wine in West Virginia, but all can be overcome. The soil itself is a challenge, having more clay than California. The growing season is also shorter. He has worked primarily with eastern grapes, and found that the viticulture and enology program at Cornell University in New York has provided excellent guidance not only for what grapes grow well in this climate, but additional advice. Paul also believes that the state of West Virginia in general and Roane County in particular can increase tourism to wineries.
Planning to really retire soon, Paul has been downsizing the vineyard to a more manageable level. He has placed the winery on the market for $400,000. That includes about 6 acres including the house, all the furniture, two areas of vines, the vineyard building with the tasting room above and the storage cellar, vats and bottler on the ground level. This is a turn-key sale.

I wish I could afford this. I’m about $400,000 short…
You and me both LOL but hopefully someone will enjoy and be able to pursue this dream. The wine currently produced is very drinkable and another winery is located about 2 miles away. He trained in California and he produces wine that drinks that way…both are feasible in this climate.

I personally did not see the house when we visited but the winery is well supplied with all the vats and equipment needed to make wine and a great tasting room above.
